Meet Charles' Parents - Ole Valineous HANSEN and Ruth Caroline MOWREY

CHARLES AUGUSTUS HANSEN

17 MARCH 1883 – 03 MARCH 1965

His Father:

Ole Valineous HANSEN
Born:   04 April 1852
            Tune, Frederikstad, Norway
He’s the only child of record in his family?
Died:   06 October 1904 (age 52)
            St. Charles, ID, USA

Ole was born in Tune (present day called Sarpsborg), Ostfold, Norway.  He came to the western US just in time to marry Ruth Mowry.  Rumor has it that Ole, escaped from jail in Paris and was found under some hay by a lawman poking and searching a barn with a pitchfork.

The parish of Tune was established as a municipality January 1, 1838. The city of Sarpsborg was grounded and separated from Tune to constitute a separate administrative unit in 1839.
Tune church dating from 1910 is located at the southern end of Lake Tune. The Tune stone was found by the churchyard wall. The runestone was originally raised by Sarpsfossen, a waterfall.

The municipality (originally the parish) was named after the old farm of Tune (Norse Túnir), since the first church was built there. The name is the plural form of tún n 'fenced areas; country courtyards' (cognate to English "town").

Sarpsborg History

The city was founded as Borg by the Viking King Olav Haraldsson (Saint Olav) in 1016. It was burned to the ground by Swedish invaders in 1567 during the Northern Seven Years' War. Half the population was evacuated down the river to what is today known as Fredrikstad, about 15 kilometres (9 mi) downstream.
Much of the rebuilt town disappeared into the river Glomma during a 1702 mudslide. Again Borg was rebuilt, and it was recreated as a city in 1839, and separated from Tune as a municipality of its own.
The rural municipalities of Tune, Skjeberg, and Varteig were merged with the city on 1 January 1992. The population is steadily growing, and during the summer of 2005 it reached 50,000 inhabitants.

Ruth Caroline Mowrey ( 28 Nov 1856 – 25 Apr 1938)

Ruth was born in San Bernardino, California. To Harley Mowrey and Martha Jane Sargent.  Charles through his mother Ruth and her father Harley's Mowrey line traces back to the very earliest of pilgrim times in the colonies of the early and mid 1600's that would later form the original 13 states.  This Mowry family line along with the 1600's era Johnson line had much to do with settling our new nation after emigrating from England (see Captain John Johnson book link below and others for more information).

Ruth married the 20 year old Norwegian Ole on October 27, 1872, in Evanston, Wyoming, just before she turned 16. They had 14 children. She was short and stout and was known for getting after the kids to keep them in line. She lived to age 81, died in Pocatello and was buried in St. Charles, ID next to her husband.
